Fees

Fees charged by the Fourth Circuit are found in the Court of Appeals Miscellaneous Fee Schedule. The only fee specific to the Fourth Circuit is the $40 local attorney admission fee imposed by Local Rule 46(b), which is added to the $176 national fee for admission to practice before a court of appeals. Electronic public access fees, charged through the PACER Service Center, are found in the Electronic Public Access Fee Schedule.

Payments

Payment is due when services are requested. Payment is made to the Clerk, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, 1100 East Main Street, Suite 501, Richmond, Virginia, with the following exceptions:

  • $455 fee for appeal from district court is paid to the Clerk, U.S. District Court, when notice of appeal is filed.
  • No fee is charged for a petition for permission to appeal from district court. If the court of appeals grants permission to appeal, a $455 appeal fee is paid to the Clerk, U.S. District Court, when permission is granted.
  • $298 fee for bankruptcy appeal is paid to the Clerk, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, when notice of appeal is filed. If the court of appeals grants permission for a direct appeal from bankruptcy court, an additional $157 is paid to the Clerk, U.S. Bankruptcy Court when permission is granted.
  • $450 fee for appeal from tax court is paid to the Clerk, U.S. Tax Court.

Credit Card Payments

Any fees due to the Clerk, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, may be paid by credit card through CM/ECF.
