Judge Stephanie D. Thacker of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit continues to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to civic education by connecting with students at every stage of their academic journey. Through classroom discussions, courthouse programs, teacher institutes, and moot court competitions, she helps students and educators better understand the federal judiciary while encouraging thoughtful civic engagement and public service.
This spring, Judge Thacker spent a week with students at Appalachian School of Law, participating in an open luncheon and meeting with the Honors Program and Criminal Law Society. Students had the opportunity to learn about her career, ask questions, and receive practical advice on pursuing careers in the legal profession. These conversations provided meaningful insight into the work of the federal judiciary and the importance of public service.
Judge Thacker also joined a distinguished panel of federal judges from the Second Circuit, Eleventh Circuit, and the District of Hawaii, at Cornell Law School in April for the 2026 Langfan Family First-Year Moot Court Competition, where she evaluated first-year law students as they demonstrated their oral advocacy skills. By providing constructive feedback and encouraging professionalism, she helped prepare the next generation of attorneys for future courtroom advocacy.
Her dedication to civic education extends to both students and educators. In addition to participating in the Teacher Institute held in Charleston, WV in July, where she shared her experience and perspectives with educators, Judge Thacker worked alongside Chief District Judge Frank W. Volk to welcome students from Parkersburg South High School to the courthouse for a day of learning about the federal court system. Students toured the courthouse, participated in discussions with judges and court professionals, explored the many career opportunities within the judiciary, and tested their knowledge through an interactive quiz. The program concluded with informal conversations over lunch, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with members of the federal judiciary.
Whether mentoring future lawyers, supporting educators, or introducing high school students to the work of the courts, Judge Thacker makes time to participate in so many outreach opportunities, reflecting the mission of Courts4Civics: fostering civic understanding, inspiring future leaders, and strengthening public confidence in the federal judiciary.
