Portraits of the Lewis F. Powell, Jr. U.S. Courthouse

The Fourth Circuit's tradition of honoring judges with portraits began on December 15, 1923, when Senior Judge John C. Rose presided over a special session organized to receive the first four portraits in the collection.

It has grown to 32 portraits and includes works by many well-known artists who are represented in the permanent collections of museums, universities, and other institutions. Portraits are commissioned by law clerks or family and generally presented at a court memorial for the judge.
