DeAndrea Gist Benjamin Confirmed to Fourth Circuit

February 13, 2023

The Senate has confirmed the nomination of DeAndrea Gist Benjamin of South Carolina to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Benjamin's confirmation fills a vacancy created by Judge Henry F. Floyd's assumption of senior status.

Benjamin served on the bench of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of South Carolina, a trial court of general jurisdiction, from 2011-2023 and served on the bench of the City of Columbia Municipal Court from 2004-2011. Prior to her judicial service, she was in private practice from 2001-2011. She was appointed to the South Carolina Board of Juvenile Parole from 2001-2004, serving as vice chair from 2002-2003. Benjamin was also an assistant attorney general with the Office of the Attorney General of South Carolina from 1999-2001, and an assistant solicitor with the Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office from 1998-1999.

Benjamin earned her B.A. from Winthrop University and her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Following law school, she clerked for the Honorable L. Casey Manning of the Fifth Judicial Circuit from 1997-1998.

The Fourth Circuit hears appeals from the nine federal district courts in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and from federal administrative agencies.
