In this session, join Circuit Judge Toby Heytens for a conversation with the Solicitor General as she shares her insights on her role within the Department of Justice and its impact on the lower federal courts.

Effective Advocacy before the Fourth Circuit: Perspectives from the Bench
Michelle Kallen, a partner at Jenner & Block LLP and the former Solicitor General of Virginia, moderates a panel discussion with Chief Judge Albert Diaz and Circuit Judges Allison Jones Rushing and DeAndrea Gist Benjamin. The panel shares practical tips for effective appellate advocacy, answering questions about Fourth Circuit practice and procedure and offering strategies for both written briefs and oral arguments.

Agency Appeals in the Fourth Circuit
Tips and Traps in Litigating Agency Appeals and a Behind-The-Scenes Look at How Your Appeal is Processed
Join William & Mary Law School Professor Allison Orr Larsen as she moderates a discussion on litigating administrative agency appeals in the Fourth Circuit. Although the focus is on agency appeals, the session will include a behind-the-scenes look at how appeals are processed in the Fourth Circuit, including criteria considered in deciding whether to hear oral argument and the role of the Office of Staff Counsel. Panelists include John R. Grimm, Partner, Goodell, DeVries, Leech & Dann, LLP; Nwamaka Anowi, Clerk of Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; and Christopher D. Dunn, Staff Attorney, Office of Staff Counsel, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
